So we are three days into school......have you started the D5 training of your students? Let's start discussing what grade level we are teaching. When we first started the Daily 5 and share why you are wanting to use D5. Bring up any confusions you have or if you have any scheduling questions. Some of you may also be implementing the CAFE boards, if you are - what strategies have you introduced......let me know if none of you are using the CAFE and I will not start discussions on that tool. Lets start blogging!
I will share a little background on myself first.....I teach 3rd grade at Blake, this will be my 3rd year using the Daily 5. I absolutely love it! I started using it because I felt like my reading group rotations were such a waste of time and I needed help with training kids to do what they need to do while I am working with other students. I started D5 on the first day of school this year. We will be learning Ipick on Monday. I use the basal for our 10-15 minute lessons but for small groups/read to self each student reads from their own chosen book that is on their level. On our CAFE board we have introduce, back up and reread and check for understanding.

Lets try this again for the 3rd time....I couldn't get my comment to post but think I figured it out.
I am teaching 5th grade this year and will be using both Daily 5 and Cafe for the first time. I started introducing them both on the first day. So far I have introduced the kids to check for understanding, back up and reread, tune into interesting words and cross checking (the kids like the hand motions for this one). We have only been working with Read to Self so far. I also plan on introducing the IPICK strategy this week.
I am really excited about having this blog available to share ideas with fellow teachers. I was feeling a bit overwhelmed at first so I'm looking forward to having people to share ideas with.
Sandra - Glad to have you on the blog! I t will be interesting to see if your fifth graders progress at a faster pace! What made you decide to use Daily FIve?
Haven't really been able to get going on Daily 5 yet. Doing Dibels and running records left little time to establish Daily 5. Hope to get it going next week. Did try building stamina once and students couldn't even last a minute so we'll keep working on that.
Busy Bee - It is important to complete those beginning of the year tests. I would encourage you to continue to try building stamina - this time of year it seems like they will never get it but the more consistent you are with the training the better results you will have!
